Day 18 – Three Little Birds

Day 18 - Three Little BirdsThis morning the weather brought us cold and rain and if you believe the Denver weather services we could get up to 3 inches of snow today. I doubt it, as they love to hype the smallest threat of snow for ratings, but time will tell.

Since it is cold and rainy I worked out on the Nordic Track and Bow Flex today. I hadn’t used my Bow Flex in about 10 days so my muscles were pretty tight by the end of my usual work out. I really noticed that I felt thinner than my last indoor work out, particularly when Nordic Tracking and doing crunches.

I was listening to a great Playlist on my iPod, jamming out to REM’s Superman, Rolling Stones’ Happy and Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. I was struck by how beautiful the lyrics are in Three Little Birds:

Rise up this mornin,
Smiled with the risin sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin, (this is my message to you-ou-ou:)
Singin: dont worry bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry (dont worry) bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!

That brings such wonderful imagery and I can just imagine Bob looking outside his Jamaican home and seeing the playful birds as their song fills his heart with joy. Very nice. Thanks Bob!

A lot of people still buy into the myth that they need to eat meat or dairy in order to be an athlete. That simply isn’t true. Look no further than the story of Carl Lewis, who became a vegan before his most productive Olympic gold medal winning years. Dr. Graham, who has trained many Olympic caliber athletes, explains: “Every nutrient known to be essential for human health is available, in proper concentration, in plant foods. This is not so with animal-based foods, as there are many essential nutrients totally absent in them.”

Also, I learned while watching Celebrity Apprentice that former NFL superstar Herschel Walker is a vegetarian. He says that he eats 6 times a day and can do as many as 2000 push ups in a day. Incredible!!

Not only are there many vegan athletes in track and field and ironman competitions, but there are many successful vegan body builders. That surprised me a bit, but it makes sense if you think about it.

There are plenty of great resources out there to help you to perform at optimal levels if you like to cycle long distances or if run marathons. I know that “bonking” or running out of energy has always been an issue for me for 30+ mile bike rides, so I’ll study the information at that link to get more out of my rides and increase my energy.

I am pretty stoked to go ride my bike and can’t wait to see what it feels like next Spring when I am so much lighter. I should be pretty darned quick then and I’m sure that I’ll be able to cut a huge amount of time off of how long it takes me to ride a 50 mile loop.

For breakfast I had the usual oatmeal with chopped almonds and diced apple. For lunch I tried another lunch option from Amy’s Brown Rice, Black Eyed Peas, and Vegetables Bowl. It was okay but I would give it maybe a “C” and I vastly prefer the Brown Rice and Vegetables Bowl with tofu. That was an A (for a frozen food) rating for sure. However, to be fair I really don’t like Blacked Eyed Peas. Why they named a restaurant chain after them I’ll never understand.

Amy’s has a number of frozen vegan quick serve mealsthat sounded good to me including, Baked Ziti Bowl, Teryaki Bowl, Thai Stir Fry, Indian Vegetable Korma, Mexican Tamale Pie, Shepherd’s Pie, Roasted Vegetable Pizza and Rice Crust Pizza. The names really don’t do them justice. You have to go to the web site to check out the ingredients.

For dinner we had spaghetti toppeed with a wonderful home made marinara sauce with mushrooms. It was quite good and very filling. After dinner I had some popcorn while watching “The Office” wedding episode. It was pretty darned funny. Most special comedy episode suck, but Jim and Pam’s wedding episode was really funny and touching. Well done!

I was a very unlikely person to become a vegan, so I wanted to share my day to day experiences as a regular guy that went vegan. Read about what I like and don't like, how I'm feeling and the many changes I've noticed. Please share your comments!
